Dog sledding in Ekorrsele – summer and winter
Travel through forests and open countryside along the Vindelälven River with a team of sled dogs. As the sled or cart gets under way, the dogs quickly settle into their rhythm, working together as they pull you through the landscape. You can experience dog sledding here throughout the year, with or without snow. The tours are run by Aurora Borealis Adventures in Ekorrsele. In winter, you travel by sled. In summer and autumn, the dogs pull specially designed carts instead. Summer also brings beaver safaris by paddleboard, while in winter you can join tours that offer the chance to see the northern lights.

Getting there
From Wallhalla, drive towards Vindeln via Vännäs. Continue north along the Vindelälven River and turn towards Ekorrsele after around 30 kilometres. Follow the signs to Aurora Borealis Adventures. The drive from Wallhalla takes around one hour.

Try dog sledding in summer
Aurora Borealis Adventures is one of the few operators to offer dog sledding even when there is no snow. Specially designed carts mean you can experience the energy of the dogs while travelling through green summer forests or colourful autumn scenery.
Try “A Taste of Mushing” for your first experience
This shorter tour is a good choice if you are travelling with children or trying dog sledding for the first time. You will meet the dogs, learn the basics and then head out on a shorter trip.
Join a beaver safari in summer
During the summer, Donald takes guests out onto the river by stand-up paddleboard or on a paddling trip in search of beavers. The tours take place in the evening, when beavers are at their most active. A little patience and quiet are needed, but spotting one in its natural habitat can be a memorable experience.

Do I need any previous dog-sledding experience?
No. You do not need any previous experience. Donald and Maria explain everything you need to know before you set off and guide you throughout the experience. Most guests are trying dog sledding for the first time.
Can children take part?
Yes. The activities are suitable for families. Younger children travel with an adult in the sled or cart, while older children may sometimes be able to drive themselves, depending on their age and experience.
What is included in the price?

How long does a dog-sledding trip take?
It depends on the tour, but most trips last between one and three hours.
When is the best time to see the northern lights?
The northern lights season generally runs from around September to March, when the nights are dark enough. December to February is often a particularly good time to visit. Northern lights tours can also be combined with dog sledding and an overnight stay.
